Atheism, Religion and Black People

PRESENTATION & DISCUSSION

Clyde Young will discuss Bob Avakian’s new title, Away with All Gods! Unchaining the Mind and Radically Changing the World (Insight Press 2008). Avakian brings a unique revolutionary communist perspective to the discourse on religion and atheism. Away With All Gods! includes extensive scholarship on the history and role of religion in the Black experience in America, as discussed in sections titled "The Bible Belt is the Lynching Belt," "Slavery, White Supremacy and Religion in America" and "Religion, Fundamentalism, and the Slave Mentality." A deep thread woven through Away With All Gods! is the need to fully rupture with all forms of superstition, and to take up instead a truly scientific approach to understanding and transforming reality.

Clyde Young has written and lectured extensively over many years on issues pertaining to Black people and revolution. He recently presented this talk at UCLA during the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books.
