Garden for the Environment will offer the following classes in May 2008. All classes will be offered at Garden for the Environment, a half-acre organic demonstration garden in San Francisco at 7th and Lawton Street. Since it’s founding in 1990, the garden has operated as a demonstration site for small-scale urban ecological food production, organic gardening, compost education and low water-use landscaping.

URBAN
COMPOSTING
Date: Saturday, May 3rd, 10AM – 12Noon
Location: Garden for the Environment, 7th Ave at Lawton St., San Francisco
Jump-start your Spring garden with some homemade compost! Aside from giving veggies and flowers a healthy start, composting encourages beneficial organisms in the soil and can help break the life cycle of plant pests and diseases. Join Garden for the Environment for this fun, hands-on workshop teaching methods for backyard and worm composting. Come learn what you can do to improve your garden without chemical fertilizers or pesticides and prevent organic waste from ending up in the landfill! Rot on!

EARTHEN OVEN BUILDING
WORKSHOP
Date: Saturday, May 10th, 10AM – 12Noon
Location: Garden for the Environment, 7th Ave at Lawton St., San Francisco
In this workshop we will learn the basics of natural building by constructing a cob oven. This fun and inspiring one-day workshop will cover material choices, design options, and build the main chamber of a cob oven. We will use locally sources materials to raise awareness of what is possible in our own backyard. ADVANCED COMPOSTING: DIY COMPOST BIN DESIGN, C/N RATIOS DEMYSTIFIED, URBAN SOURCES OF GREENS
& BROWNS

Location: Garden for the Environment, 7th Ave at Lawton St., San Francisco
You've set up your compost bin and made some of that delicious Gardener's Gold…you’re ready to take it to the next level! (your bin and its contents that is). Join us for this Advanced Composting workshop to learn about DIY compost bin designs from reclaimed materials and participate in the hands-on construction of a bin made from salvaged materials. Further, we’ll discuss urban sources for the greens and browns your compost pile needs and learn the science behind Carbon / Nitrogen ratios, both in the pile and of individual materials. ROT ON!
