How Democracy Works in Cuba

Canadian researcher, journalist, and political activist Arnold August will report on Cuban election procedures and results on Friday, April 18, 7:30 PM at the First United Methodist Church, 9 Ross Valley Drive (at Fourth Street), San Rafael. Using a PowerPoint presentation, he will take us on a virtual tour through the Cuban electoral process, including voters’ registration, direct nomination of candidates by citizens for election to the Municipal Assemblies without interference from a political party, the secret ballot voting procedure, and the public counting of votes.

Mr. August is author of Democracy in Cuba and the 1997-98 Elections and has written many articles based on his research of the Cuban electoral system. He is currently working on a second book, Cuba: Participatory Democracy and Elections in the 21st Century, which will be published in 2009.

Arnold August has been instrumental in organizing educational tours to Cuba for American and Canadian university and college students in collaboration with Cuban universities. He has been to Cuba more than 35 times.

This event is sponsored by the Task Force on the Americas. A $5-10 donation is requested. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. The venue is wheelchair accessible.
