Formed in 1967 to preserve the natural beauty of the West Virginia Highlands, the Conservancy is the state's oldest environmental advocacy organization. One of WVHC's current challenges is the rescue of Blackwater Canyon, which was acquired by a private timber company which is doing extensive logging and appears to plan condominium development along the canyon's rim. WVHC is also working in vigorous opposition to coal mining by mountaintop removal. This environmentally destructive practice is now widespread in southern West Virginia.
