A private, nonprofit organization established in 1946 (as the "Volunteer Bureau") to provide San Francisco with a centralized source of volunteer information. For many years, The Volunteer Center focused almost entirely on this "clearinghouse" function. In the late 1980s, we began developing more specialized programs that concentrate on specific populations and community needs. The Center now serves communities throughout the Peninsula with programs geared toward people with disabilities, youth, corporate volunteers, potential board members, and more.
