Founded in 1981 in response to calls from various Salvadoran communities to assist refugees. In the 1980s and early 1990s, SHARE launched public education campaigns around the realities of the Salvadoran civil war. SHARE sought to stop the widespread human rights abuses taking place in El Salvador while encouraging the US government to advocate for a peaceful solution to the war. Today, SHARE continues to support the empowerment of impoverished and marginalized communities in El Salvador, as they strive to meet their most immediate needs and construct long-term sustainable solutions to the problems of poverty, underdevelopment and social injustice.
